If your Korea tax refund has not reached your credit card yet, it does not automatically mean the refund was lost. The most important questions are how you requested the refund, whether any required customs export confirmation was completed, and whether the refund operator has actually sent the money to your card.
There is no single current processing time that applies to every Korea tourist tax refund, refund operator, or foreign-issued card. A refund submitted through a designated box can follow a different timeline from an electronic card refund that an operator has already processed, while a payment marked as completed may still take additional time to appear in your card account.
Last checked: September 10, 2026. Korea’s tourist tax-refund procedures and refund-operator services can change. Use the operator shown on your own refund voucher and follow its current official instructions.
Quick answer: First confirm that you were expecting a separate card refund at all. Then identify the tax-refund company on your receipt, check whether any required customs export confirmation was completed, and check the operator’s refund status. If the operator confirms that the refund was sent, the next place to check is your card issuer.
First, Make Sure You Were Supposed to Receive a Card Refund

Korea uses several tourist tax-refund methods, and not all of them result in money appearing later on a credit card. This distinction is easy to miss after returning home.
| What Happened | What to Check |
|---|---|
| Immediate tax refund at the store | The tax was deducted when you paid, so there is normally no separate refund from that transaction to wait for later. |
| Card refund requested through a refund operator | Check whether the operator has approved and sent the refund before asking your card issuer to trace the credit. |
| Refund submitted through a designated box or mailbox procedure | Processing can follow a different timeline. Check the current instructions and status with the refund operator shown on your document. |
| Downtown general refund procedure used before departure | For eligible goods, customs export confirmation is still required when departing Korea. |
The current VISITKOREA Comprehensive Tax Refund Guide distinguishes the Immediate Tax Refund System from general downtown, airport, mailbox, and mobile refund procedures. With an immediate refund, the applicable tax is deducted from the purchase price at the store instead of being refunded later.
Check your original store receipt before chasing a missing payment. If the amount you paid already reflects an immediate tax refund, there is no second refund from the same transaction to wait for.
How Long Can a Korea Tax Refund Take?
There is no single current official processing time for every Korean tourist tax refund. The timing depends on the refund method, the company processing the transaction, and the payment destination.
An older VISITKOREA Duty Free & Tax Refunds guide states that when a request placed in a designated box is successfully processed, a refund to an international credit card, Alipay, or WeChat Pay may take one to two months. However, that page also notes that its information may differ from current procedures, and the newer Comprehensive Tax Refund Guide does not give one universal card-processing time.
For that reason, treat the one-to-two-month figure as a reference for that particular procedure rather than a deadline or standard waiting period for every Korea tax refund. Your refund operator’s current status and instructions are more useful for diagnosing a specific missing payment.
Operator-specific guidance can be shorter once a refund has reached the payment stage. For example, Global Blue’s general Help Centre currently says that credit-card payments made through a Refund Office usually take three to five days. It also says that after a traveler receives confirmation that a credit-card refund was paid, another two to five days may be needed for it to appear in the account.
Those are Global Blue’s general processing estimates, not a universal Korea tax-refund timetable. If your tax-free form is from Global Blue, use its official Refund Tracker or Help Centre for the transaction itself.
Check the Refund Operator Before Calling Your Bank
The shop where you bought the goods and the company that processes the refund are not necessarily the same business. VISITKOREA lists refund brands including Global Blue, GLOBAL TAX FREE, Easy Tax Refund, and CubeRefund.
Look at the refund voucher or tax-refund receipt for the operator’s name and transaction or document number. If you do not yet know whether the claim was approved, rejected, or sent for payment, the refund operator is usually the more useful first contact than your card issuer.
Some operators provide online status tools. GLOBAL TAX FREE’s official traveler service currently includes refund-history and application-status functions. Global Blue also provides transaction tracking using the document information on the tax-free form.
Keep the refund document number, purchase date, store name, expected refund amount, departure date, and any confirmation messages available when contacting the operator. Use the operator’s official website or the contact details printed on your refund documentation rather than an unofficial travel forum or advertisement.
Missing Customs Confirmation Can Stop a General Refund
This section applies to general refund procedures that require export confirmation, not a purchase where an immediate refund was already completed at the store.
A purchase at a participating tax-refund store does not by itself complete every general refund. The Korea Customs Service states that eligible goods must receive the required confirmation that they are being taken out of Korea.
The official Korea Customs Service tax-refund guidance explains that travelers may need their passport, sales documentation, and purchased goods for outbound confirmation.
This is especially important with downtown general refunds. The current VISITKOREA guide states that travelers using a downtown refund procedure for eligible goods must still complete the applicable customs export-confirmation step when departing Korea.
Operator procedures can add further conditions. CubeRefund’s current downtown procedure states that credit-card, Alipay, and WeChat Pay refunds are transferred after customs export verification. It also states that its advance cash-refund procedure can involve a credit-card guarantee and that the refund may be cancelled or the guarantee charged when the applicable export conditions are not completed.
You can check the current CubeRefund downtown refund procedure if CubeRefund is the operator shown on your document.
If you have already left Korea and discover that a required customs step may not have been completed, contact the refund operator. Whether anything can still be corrected depends on the refund method, operator, and status of that specific transaction.
What If the Refund Operator Says “Paid” or “Completed”?
The operator’s status helps determine who to contact next. If the claim is still pending, waiting for customs confirmation, missing information, rejected, or otherwise incomplete, the issue is still on the refund-processing side.
If the operator confirms that the refund has already been sent to your nominated credit card, check your card account again and then contact the card issuer. VISITKOREA notes that refund amounts and processing periods can vary depending on the credit card.
When contacting the issuer, explain that you are trying to locate an incoming tax-refund credit rather than the original Korean purchase. Provide the refund date, amount and currency, refund operator, and any transaction or payment reference supplied by the refund company.
If the card used for the refund has expired, been replaced, or been closed, ask the issuer how it handles credits sent to the previous card account. Do not assume that every card issuer handles these situations in the same way.
Check These Problems in Order
- Check the original purchase. Confirm whether the store already deducted the tax through Korea’s immediate refund system.
- Find the refund voucher. Identify the company responsible for processing the refund.
- Confirm the refund method. Determine whether you requested a credit-card refund, designated-box or mailbox procedure, mobile refund, cash refund, or another supported option.
- Check customs export confirmation. For a general refund that required it, confirm whether the export-confirmation step was completed before departure.
- Check the operator’s status. Look for pending, completed, rejected, customs-related, or other status information.
- Check the correct processing guidance. Use the current instructions for your refund operator and method rather than applying one timeline to every Korea tax refund.
- Contact the operator if the refund is incomplete. Ask what is preventing the transaction from moving to payment.
- Contact your card issuer after the operator confirms payment. Ask the issuer to check for the incoming credit using the transaction information supplied by the refund company.
When Should You Stop Waiting?
Do not use a single number of days or months as the deadline for every Korea tax refund. First check the refund method and whether your operator publishes a current processing estimate for that type of transaction.
If you used a designated box or mailbox procedure, be aware that older VISITKOREA guidance cited one to two months for a successfully processed request. Because current procedures and operator timelines can differ, use that figure only as context rather than waiting for two months before checking the transaction.
If the operator’s stated processing period has already passed, or the status shows that documents, customs confirmation, payment information, or another action is still required, contact the operator instead of continuing to wait without checking.
If the operator confirms that payment was completed but the credit is still missing after the operator’s stated card-posting period, contact your card issuer with the payment confirmation and transaction details and ask whether the incoming credit can be located.
If the Problem Started at the Airport
If you have not yet left Korea and the real problem is that the airport machine cannot find your transaction, requests Customs inspection, or stops working, the recovery steps are different. See Korea Tax Refund Kiosk Not Working? What to Do at the Airport before abandoning the refund process.
For a post-trip card delay, focus on the transaction trail: confirm the refund method, identify the refund operator, verify any required customs confirmation, check the operator’s status, and contact the card issuer after the refund company says the payment has been sent. That sequence helps identify where the refund is actually delayed without guessing.
