For most travelers, the practical order is KTX first, express bus second and flight third. The exception is when your location in Seoul or your final destination in Busan makes a different option clearly faster door to door.
Take KTX If You Can Still Make a Realistic Departure
KTX is normally the first option to check when you are still able to reach a high-speed rail station. KORAIL has published a new KTX timetable effective from September 1, 2026, but do not plan around a memorized “last train” time. Use the current KORAIL timetable and, more importantly, run a date-specific booking search for the night you are traveling.
Since September 1, 2026, high-speed rail operations previously split between KORAIL and SR have been integrated. Travelers should no longer follow older instructions that treat KTX from Seoul and SRT from Suseo as completely separate booking systems. How Late Can You Buy a KTX Ticket?
Do not assume online sales closing means every way of buying a ticket has closed. KORAIL’s official ticketing guide currently says website ticket sales are available until 20 minutes before departure, vending-machine sales until 10 minutes before departure, and station ticket sales until departure.
Those sales cutoffs do not mean a seat or standing ticket will still exist. If a departure shows sold out, check the current KORAIL inventory again and ask railway staff about any valid ticket options if you are already at the station. Do not board a sold-out train without a valid ticket.
Check the Busan Arrival Time Too
A late KTX can bring you to Busan after your normal local public-transport connection has finished. Before paying, check how you will travel from Busan Station to your accommodation at the expected arrival time.
This is one reason door-to-door time matters more than the rail journey alone. A fast KTX is not necessarily the fastest complete trip if you lose time reaching the departure station or arranging your final transfer in Busan.
When the Late-Night Express Bus Is the Better Backup

Current September 2026 booking listings show post-midnight departures such as 01:00 and 02:00 on some dates. Treat these as date-specific examples rather than guaranteed daily departure times. Search your exact travel date before relying on a particular coach.
The Korea Tourism Organization’s express and intercity bus guide lists Busan among the routes served from Seoul Express Bus Terminal and notes that additional charges can apply during late-night hours. It also lists Klook and Hanpass as booking options for international travelers.
This is not a Seoul city “night bus.” It is a reserved long-distance express coach between intercity terminals. Current route listings show a scheduled journey of about four hours, although road conditions can affect the actual arrival time.
Watch the Calendar Date After Midnight
A date mistake can make a valid bus appear to be missing. If it is 11:30 p.m. on September 5 and you want a 1:00 a.m. departure, search September 6, because the coach departs after the calendar has changed.
Check both the remaining departures for the current night and the early departures on the following date. Do this before assuming there is no overnight coach.
Confirm the Busan Terminal Before Paying
The Seoul departure is Seoul Express Bus Terminal, while the Busan arrival is Busan Central Bus Terminal in Nopo. It is not Busan Station.
A coach that departs later can still be the wrong choice if reaching your hotel from Nopo at the arrival time is difficult. Check the final transfer before choosing the bus purely because it leaves after the trains.

Why a Flight Is Usually the Weakest Late-Night Option

This makes a flight a weak rescue plan if you only start looking after missing a late train. You still have to travel to Gimpo, meet the airline’s check-in and boarding requirements, fly to Gimhae and then continue to your destination in Busan.
Do not travel to Gimpo hoping that an overnight flight will appear. Confirm a suitable flight first and follow the airline’s current check-in and boarding deadlines.
What to Do If It Is Already Late
- Search rail immediately. Check the current KORAIL system for Seoul or, when practical from your location, Suseo to Busan.
- Compare the departure with your real station-arrival time. If you cannot safely reach the station and platform in time, move to the next option instead of comparing timetable times that you cannot use.
- Search the express bus next. Use Seoul Express Bus Terminal as the departure point and Busan Central Bus Terminal as the destination.
- Check the following calendar date. A coach leaving at 1:00 or 2:00 a.m. belongs to the new date after midnight.
- Compare the Busan arrival point. KTX arrives at Busan Station, the express bus at Nopo and a flight at Gimhae Airport.
- Choose a flight only when an appropriate service is already confirmed. Gimpo’s overnight curfew makes flying a limited late-night fallback.
