If you miss your KTX train in Korea, do not assume that your old ticket lets you board the next KTX. Check whether you can refund the missed ticket, then make sure you have a valid ticket for the train you actually take.
If the train has only just left, act quickly. KORAIL allows post-departure refunds under certain conditions, but the penalty increases as more time passes. An eligible mobile ticket may also be refundable within 10 minutes after departure when the system confirms that you did not board.
Last checked: October 6, 2026. KORAIL rules, app functions and special holiday conditions can change, so check the rule attached to your ticket if you are traveling later.
Missed Your KTX? Do These 3 Things First
- Check the exact departure time. Make sure the train has actually departed rather than being delayed.
- Deal with the missed ticket immediately. Check Korail+ if you have an eligible mobile ticket, or go to a staffed station ticket counter.
- Search for your next train. If you still need to travel, obtain a valid ticket for the departure you plan to board.
| Situation | Best next step |
|---|---|
| The train left less than 10 minutes ago | Check your mobile ticket immediately. KORAIL’s FAQ says an eligible mobile ticket may be refunded within 10 minutes after departure if non-boarding can be confirmed. |
| The mobile refund option is unavailable | Go to a staffed railway ticket counter as soon as possible and ask about a post-departure refund. |
| You still need to travel | Search for the next available departure and obtain a valid new ticket. |
| The next KTX is sold out | Check later departures and ask station staff whether another valid ticket option is available. |
| You missed the last useful train | Check any remaining rail service, then compare long-distance bus options if rail is finished for the night. |
Can You Take the Next KTX With the Ticket You Missed?

Do not assume that you can. A KTX reservation is issued for a particular journey, and missing that departure does not automatically transfer your reservation to the next train.
If you want to travel on a later departure, make sure you have a valid ticket for that train. If station staff changes or reissues your booking, follow the details on the newly issued ticket.
This applies even when the later KTX is going to exactly the same destination. Do not board first and plan to sort out the ticket afterward.
How to Refund a KTX Ticket After Departure
KORAIL’s current FAQ says that after a train has departed, a passenger can request a refund at a railway station, with the applicable post-departure penalty deducted.
The FAQ also says an eligible mobile ticket can be refunded within 10 minutes after departure when the system confirms that the passenger did not board. KORAIL’s mobile app is now called Korail+, following the August 2026 replacement of the KorailTalk name.
If the refund option does not appear on your phone, do not spend too long searching through menus while the penalty clock is running. Go to a staffed ticket counter and show your ticket or booking information.
You can review KORAIL’s official refund FAQ for the current guidance.
Current KTX refund penalties after departure
KORAIL’s published passenger transportation terms currently list the following standard post-departure penalties.
| When you request the refund | Standard penalty |
|---|---|
| Within 20 minutes after departure, Monday to Thursday | 15% |
| Within 20 minutes after departure, Friday to Sunday or a public holiday | 30% |
| More than 20 minutes and up to 60 minutes after departure | 40% |
| More than 60 minutes after departure but before the destination arrival time | 70% |
| After the destination arrival time | 100% |
If the train itself is delayed, the applicable destination arrival time can be adjusted by the delay under KORAIL’s terms. Special holiday periods, promotional tickets, passes and other ticket products may also have separate conditions.
You can review the detailed rules in KORAIL’s official passenger transportation terms.
Book the Next KTX Separately
After dealing with the missed ticket, search the current booking system for the next departure. You can use Korail+ or the official KORAIL website for international passengers.
You do not need to wait for a credit-card refund to appear before buying your replacement ticket if you need to continue your trip immediately. The railway refund can be accepted before the card issuer finishes processing the credit.
For example, if you missed a 10:00 KTX from Seoul to Busan and a 10:30 train is available, make sure you hold a valid ticket for the 10:30 departure before boarding it.
What if the next KTX is sold out?
Check several later departures instead of looking at only one train. If you are already at a major station, ask the ticket counter whether another valid option is available.
Standing or other non-reserved options may sometimes be offered when regular reserved seats are unavailable, but they are not guaranteed on every train. Confirm availability with KORAIL before boarding.
If You Know Before Departure That You Will Miss the Train
If you already know that you cannot reach your KTX in time, dealing with the ticket before departure is usually better than waiting until it becomes a missed train.
KORAIL expanded its mobile ticket-change service in February 2026. For eligible tickets on the same route, the service allows passengers to change to another train until 30 minutes before the original departure, subject to the available replacement trains.
KORAIL also expanded the eligible replacement range from same-day trains to trains within seven days before or after the original travel date for the same route.
You can review KORAIL’s official ticket-change announcement.
If you are stuck in a taxi or subway and already know that you cannot reach the platform, check whether your ticket can still be changed before the cutoff instead of waiting for the train to depart.
What If You Miss the Last KTX of the Day?
Search the live KORAIL booking system first rather than relying on a memorized last-train time. The final useful departure varies by route, station and travel date.
If rail is genuinely finished for the night, a long-distance express or intercity bus may be the next practical option. For the Seoul to Busan route, the KoreaEasyTrip guide to Seoul to Busan late at night compares KTX with late-night bus and flight alternatives.
Check the departure terminal before buying a bus ticket. A long-distance bus terminal may be far from the KTX station, and the arrival terminal at your destination may also be different from the railway station.
What If Your KTX Ticket Has Disappeared From the App?
A missed train and a ticket that does not appear in Korail+ are different problems.
If your train has not departed but you cannot find the ticket, do not immediately purchase the same journey again. First check the booking channel that originally issued the reservation.
The KoreaEasyTrip guide to a KTX ticket not showing in Korail+ explains how to check bookings made through Korail+, the KORAIL website and other booking routes.
Quick Checklist for Foreign Travelers
- Confirm whether the train has actually departed.
- Open your ticket immediately. If only a few minutes have passed, check whether mobile post-departure refund is available.
- Go to the station counter if necessary. Post-departure penalties increase with time.
- Search the next departure. Do not assume your old ticket transfers automatically.
- Buy or obtain a valid replacement ticket. Confirm the train number, departure time, car and seat before boarding.
- If rail is finished for the night, compare another rail departure or a long-distance bus.
Keep your original booking information until the refund is settled. If you bought the ticket through a third-party travel platform rather than directly from KORAIL, the seller’s refund or change process may also apply.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I just take the next KTX after missing my train?
No. Do not assume your missed ticket is valid for a later departure. Obtain a valid ticket for the train you actually plan to board, unless KORAIL staff has officially changed or reissued your booking.
Do I lose the entire ticket price if I miss a KTX?
Not necessarily. Under KORAIL’s standard rules, a post-departure refund may still be available before the destination arrival time, but an increasing penalty is deducted as more time passes.
Can I refund a missed KTX ticket in the app?
KORAIL’s current FAQ says an eligible mobile ticket can be refunded within 10 minutes after departure when the system confirms that the passenger did not board. If the option is unavailable, go to a staffed station ticket counter promptly.
What if I booked the KTX through a travel website?
Check the terms of the service that actually issued the ticket. Third-party bookings may use a different refund or change process from a ticket purchased directly through KORAIL.
The safest order after missing a KTX is simple: deal with the missed ticket immediately, check the next available departure, and board only when you have a valid ticket for that train.
