This date difference matters because Korea’s high-speed rail booking system is changing during August and September 2026. Instructions written before the transition can describe a payment or booking route that no longer matches the system currently shown to travelers.
Why SRT foreign-card instructions may conflict
SR officially introduced online payment with overseas-issued credit cards in 2023. That explains why older travel guides may tell international visitors to open the SRT website or app and enter a foreign card. The original change is documented in SR’s 2023 foreign-card announcement.
The current situation is different. The live English SRT booking page now displays a notice saying that its online ticket checkout accepts Korean-issued credit cards rather than foreign-issued cards.
Even official travel information is not perfectly synchronized during this transition. The Korea Tourism Organization transportation chart currently available in 2026 lists foreign-card acceptance for SRT online booking, while the live SRT English booking page displays the opposite notice. For an August 2026 booking, this guide therefore follows the current payment notice shown by the SRT operator.
The timing also overlaps with the KTX-SRT integration. Korail+ launched on August 3, 2026, and tickets for integrated trains operating from September 1 went on sale through the new system on August 5 at 10:00 a.m.
August 2026 SRT: check online, buy at the station
For trains operating during August, KORAIL’s integration announcement says SRT passengers should continue using the existing SRT booking system. However, the current English SRT page says foreign-issued cards are not supported in that online checkout.
For a traveler who needs to pay with a foreign card, an in-person purchase is the practical alternative. The Korea Tourism Organization transportation payment guide lists foreign-issued credit cards as accepted at ticket machines and counters for SRT, KTX and AREX.
- Check the train first. Use the official SRT booking page to confirm the route, departure time and current seat availability.
- Check the departure station. Do not assume that your high-speed train leaves from Seoul Station. Use the station shown for the specific service you want.
- Go to a station that can sell the ticket. Allow extra time if you are buying close to departure.
- Try the ticket machine or staffed counter. Foreign-card support does not guarantee that every individual card will be authorized. If a machine rejects your card, use a staffed counter when available.
- Check the issued ticket. Confirm the date, departure station, destination, departure time, car and seat before leaving the ticket area.
The main disadvantage is availability. Buying in person does not secure a popular train while you are still outside Korea. If your travel date is busy, check seat availability in advance and keep another suitable train or transportation option in mind.
September 1, 2026 onward: start with Korail+ or KORAIL
The booking procedure changes for integrated trains operating from September 1. According to KORAIL’s August 2026 integration announcement, those tickets can be booked through Korail+ and the KORAIL website.
The existing SRT app is not disappearing immediately. KORAIL says its booking function will remain available temporarily after September 1, although SRT-app bookings will be offered on a non-member basis and some integrated membership benefits may be limited. For an international visitor, Korail+ or the official KORAIL English booking site is the clearest place to start.
- Enter your route, travel date and passenger count. Search the available trains and check the departure station carefully.
- Select the train that fits your itinerary. Use the train, station and timetable information shown in the current booking result rather than relying on an older assumption about where SRT services depart.
- Enter the requested passenger and booking information. Use contact information that you can access while traveling.
- Select the overseas-card payment option shown by the booking system.
- Complete 3D Secure authentication. KORAIL’s foreign-card payment notice says overseas-issued cards used for online transactions must have 3D Secure activated.
- Confirm that the ticket was actually issued. A bank notification or pending card authorization by itself does not prove that you have a valid train ticket.
The authentication process depends on your card issuer. It may involve a banking app, verification page, password or another issuer-controlled security step. Before relying on one card, make sure you can complete its overseas online authentication while traveling.
When do SRT tickets normally go on sale?
Under the normal sales rules, both SR and KORAIL generally open train tickets at 7:00 a.m. one month before departure. You can confirm the current rules in the official SR ticket purchase guide and the KORAIL ticket purchase guide.
The September 2026 integration was an exception. Tickets for integrated trains operating from September 1 opened on August 5 at 10:00 a.m.
For a future trip, do not assume that this temporary launch schedule still applies. Check the current official booking system for your actual travel date, particularly around Chuseok, Lunar New Year or another period with special reservation arrangements.
What to do if your foreign card is rejected
First identify which booking system you are using. If you are trying to pay for an August SRT ticket through the existing SRT English online system, its current notice says foreign-issued cards are not supported there. Repeatedly submitting the same card will not change a payment method that the checkout does not currently offer.
If you are using the KORAIL foreign-language system, check 3D Secure first. Also confirm that your issuer allows overseas online purchases and that you can complete any security request sent by the issuer.
- Check whether a ticket was already issued before attempting another payment.
- If the issuer explicitly declines the transaction, check the issuer’s official app or contact the issuer through an official support channel.
- If one foreign card fails, a second card from a different issuer can be a useful backup.
- If a station ticket machine rejects the card, try a staffed counter when available.

Before paying, confirm four details together: the train shown, departure station, departure time and destination. This is particularly important in the Seoul area, where different high-speed services may use different departure points.
If your preferred train is sold out, search nearby departure times and compare other valid rail options serving your destination. Do not buy another train only because its departure time looks similar; check its actual station, route and arrival time first.
